About the Scenery

Some of what a wildlife photographer brings home is not a species at all - it is the place itself: Hill Country canyons at first light, fog burning off a Highland Lake, storm light over the coastal prairie, bluebonnet slopes in April. These landscape frames are the settings for every bird and animal in the galleries.

Texas offers more kinds of scenery than any one camera bag can do justice to - limestone rivers, desert mountains, pine forest, barrier-island surf - and the habit of stopping for the scene when the light turns good is a discipline all its own, usually practiced while waiting for a bird that may or may not show.
